HOW TO STOP BUYING CLOTHES YOU NEVER WEAR
Buying clothes you never wear is rarely a taste problem — it is a timing problem. Clothes bought late at night, on payday, in a sale or after a bad day are chosen by a version of you who is not the one who has to get dressed on a Tuesday. Add a sale, and the calculation stops being "do I want this" and becomes "is this a good price", which is a completely different question with a much easier answer.
The two things that work
- Be unreachable during your windows. Late at night, on payday, and across sale weekends. You are not trying to stop shopping in general — you are trying to be unavailable for five or six specific hours a week.
- Delay every garment by three days. Not banned. Parked. Wanting a specific top is strikingly perishable, and three days is long enough to find out without feeling like a punishment. See the three-day rule.
The second one does something a shopping ban cannot: it tells you which purchases were real. The things you still want on day three are usually the ones you end up wearing.
Things that sound right and don't work
- A capsule wardrobe. A plan for what to own. It has nothing to say at 1am.
- "Cost per wear". Arithmetic performed by the part of you that has already decided.
- Unfollowing the brands. Helps with discovery, does nothing about the app on your phone.
